Coron is a coastal town in northern Palawan, part of the Calamian Islands, where steep limestone formations rise above clear bays, lagoons, and sheltered coves. The area also has a significant maritime history connected to the Second World War, when Japanese vessels were sunk in the waters around Coron. Today, many of these wrecks are protected underwater sites that have become closely associated with the town. Local traditions also include Tagbanwa ceremonies such as Pagdiwata, a thanksgiving gathering connected with rice harvests and spiritual beliefs.

Coron Island contains some of the region’s best-known natural attractions, including Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake, and Twin Lagoon. Kayangan Lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs and is reached by a steep trail from the coast, while Twin Lagoon consists of two water basins separated by a limestone wall. Siete Pecados Marine Park protects a group of seven small islets and surrounding coral habitat. Maquinit Hot Springs provides a different setting among mangroves and coastal vegetation. Below the surface, Coron Bay contains numerous Japanese shipwrecks, including sites visited by divers and snorkelers, as well as coral reefs supporting marine life.

Food in Coron reflects its island setting, with seafood forming an important part of meals served in local eateries and family-run restaurants. Fresh fish, squid, prawns, shellfish, rice, coconut, and tropical vegetables appear frequently, while Filipino dishes such as kinilaw, grilled seafood, sinigang, and adobo are widely available. A more unusual local food is tamilok, a wood-boring mollusk associated with mangrove areas and traditionally eaten raw with vinegar and other seasonings. Coron’s markets and small restaurants also offer Filipino street foods and regional dishes brought by families who have migrated to the Calamianes from other parts of the country.
