Berlin has an undeniable history. The horrors of World War II, division, reunification, revolution all profoundly impacted the city in the 20th century. Today, visitors will find a sophisticated, high-energy city with endless cultural, architectural and gastronomic attractions.

Attractions in Berlin include Brandenburg Gate (a reunification landmark), the Berlin Wall Memorial, Museum Island, and Berliner Fernsehturm, a 1960s television tower and observatory, as well as the tallest structure in the country. Additionally, the Berlin Opera and Philharmonic are a major cultural draw.

Learn More About Berlin

Brandenburg Gate
Sitting in the heart of Berlin, Brandenburg Gate is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. This neoclassical gate, made of twelve massive columns topped by a copper quadriga, originates in the 18th century during the reign of Prussian king Frederick William I. Once a symbol of the city's division, particularly during World War II and the Cold War, Brandenburg Gate now epitomizes the unification and peace of Berlin.

Reichstag Building
Once the seat of Imperial Germany, the Reichstag Building is one of Berlin's most historically significant monuments and was once taken by the Nazis in 1933. Following reconstruction in the 1990s, today's Reichstag houses the German Parliament and is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Instantly recognizable, the building's massive glass dome shines from atop the Reichstag.

The Holocaust Memorial
The Holocaust Memorial, or Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, is a monument to one of the country's darkest periods and an essential stop for any visitor to Berlin. Memorializing Jewish victims of the Holocaust, this monument is a stark reminder of the loss of life suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Visitors can walk between the overwhelming array of concrete slabs, which represent the millions lost before and during World War II.

Neues Museum

Neues Museum is one of the principal museums on Berlin’s Museum Island, combining archaeological collections with a building known for its restored historic fabric and modern architectural interventions. Its galleries include the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, with highlights such as the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti, ancient Egyptian sculptures, papyri, and burial objects. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History presents archaeological finds from Europe and parts of Asia, including the Berlin Gold Hat and objects from Heinrich Schliemann’s Troy collection. The building itself is also part of the experience, with preserved wall paintings, exposed historical surfaces, and a monumental central staircase designed during its restoration.

Charlottenburg Castle

Charlottenburg Palace is Berlin’s largest surviving palace complex and a former royal residence of the Hohenzollern family. The Old Palace features richly decorated Baroque rooms, including the Porcelain Cabinet, Palace Chapel, and royal bedchamber, while the New Wing contains the White Hall, Golden Gallery, and a notable collection of French paintings. The surrounding palace garden combines a restored Baroque parterre with a landscaped park, reflecting changing approaches to royal garden design. Other features include the mausoleum of Queen Luise, the Belvedere near the Spree, and the New Pavilion, giving the grounds several distinct architectural and historical points of interest.
